Nocturnal Incontinence Common in General Female Population in the UK

The September, 2000 issue of the Journal of Urology published a report on nocturnal incontinence in women living in the UK.

The report found that the prevalence of nocturnal incontinence among women living in the general UK population is both higher than generally believed.

The mean age of the 2,075 women who completed the questionnaire was 52.2 years. Nocturnal incontinence was experiences by 120 women at least once in the previous month.

Nocturnal incontinence was reported more frequently by women over the age of 80 (17.3%) compared with women between the ages of 19 and 39 years (4.3%).

Results of the survey indicated that nocturnal incontinence is not only more common than previously thought, but also there is a clear association of nocturnal incontinence with other urinary symptoms, such as urgency, daytime incontinence and nocturia." None of the women experienced isolated symptoms of nocturnal incontinence
